Modern Leadership
In simple terms leadership is the process of influencing
people in an organisation, giving them direction and guidance with an objective
of achieving organisational set goals.
Given the definition, whichever way you want to define,
leadership has three aspects, influencing people, guiding and giving direction
and achieving goals. All the three are very crucial for one to be a successful
and recognized leader in any establishment. One can be very excellent in influencing
subordinates and motivating them, they listen and follow his instruction and
very happy to be led by such a leader but as long as these efforts fail to
achieve the organisational set goals, the purpose of leadership is lost, all
such efforts are in vain.
Civilization does not stop, each passing moment brings its
own page of civilization, which has brought a lot of changes in the way people
can be led in any establishment, and be it organisation, club, social circles
or church. The following points state out the growing variation between ancient
and modern leadership.

It has been discovered that workers’ unions that
protect employees are very profitable ventures and require less capital to
start. These are very crucial organisation in the modern environment and we
have recorded a number of their advantages in employee welfare. However this
good development has brought leadership shift, autocratic leadership can work
no more. Your subordinates know verbal abusive words, sexual abusive words, and
any type of abuse you can think of. Due to this even if a leader use some bold
words trying to instill compliance to his or her subordinate, it is possible it
can be turned abusive and the leader is charged with abuse.

Education has become the way of today, literacy
rate is increasing each year, and the modern generation is becoming literate. This
shift from illiteracy to literacy is a great and desired development none can
deny. This made it possible for your subordinates to know exactly what you are
expected of as a leader. No more closed office leadership styles, today your subordinates
know when you go off road which was not popular to ancient leadership

Ancient employers promoted people into
leadership positions from performance trends, but modern use both performance and
academic. The people you lead might have better educated individuals than you. This
will impose you on a challenge of squaring your intelligence. Ancient subordinates
were just followers and have no question to instruction. Modern subordinates
once they discover your weaknesses you lose their attention.
To be an effective leader in the modern environment, you
ought to stop leading from behind like an African shepherd but from the front
like a Jewish shepherd. The duty of giving directing, guiding and achieving
goals remains but you have to be part of the team and be familiar with all the
expectation expected from you.
Open communication valves for your subordinates to have
direct encounter with you in all matters related to your journey which you are
leading. Letting people follow you is difficult because from your first day as
a leader some of your subordinates already don’t want to follow you. You need
to make them follow you, open dialogue, share with them and convince them to follow
by tangible facts.
Create a trust in your subordinates, for them to follow you
in your leadership they have to trust you. Even I, don’t want to follow the
person I don’t trust. Trust can be
created from your credibility, your discipline and punctuality. Creating trust
will make them listen to you and wanting to follow you.
Explain plainly where you are going as a team. Don’t lead
your subordinates in darkness, let them know their destination with your
leadership and how are you going to get there. Be creative to create an
excitement in your subordinates about the journey and the destination. If you
can manage their hearts and make them excited about the destination then your
journey will be interesting, productive and more importantly satisfying.
